Some of these projects can be viewed on Space Studios website. We have also organised various group projects for community groups such as on Youth Culture Television and Weekend Arts College . This has included producing courses that can be used to provide organisations with nationally accredited qualifications.
Safeguarding your work Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: (Professionals) Producers / Guerrilla film makers / Community video workers Previous Experience: production experience recommended This course aims to introduce practice that minimizes the risks involved when producing video. This includes legal responsibilities i.e. health and safety risk assessments for video production; safe practice with lights and light weight cameras; working on locations. Professional practice in postproduction: tape disciple; securing digital video data (strategies to avoid or recover from data loss). Working with timecode and batch capture; backing up (inc. the project file); file Management. RSI with computers and VDUs Digital Video Editing (beginners) Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Various inc. professionals and young people Previous Experience: basic computer literacy required, and practice with image software recommended An introduction to the software or interface. Includes: capturing, timeline layout, three point editing, trim tools, audio mixing, transitions, printing to tape. Foundation in Digital Video (tactical and technical) Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Film makers / editors / multimedia artists / edit system owners Previous Experience: some editing experience recommended Fundamental information required when making tactical and technical decisions to do with video (DV format) within a computer. This course is aimed at those who have already used video in their work and may have come across problems. Topics include comparing craft forms and available tools (hardware & software); engineering properties & formats of the medium; and professional practice (methodology / disciplines / conventions) Digital Video Editing (intermediate) Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Film makers / editors / multimedia artists / edit system owners Previous Experience: editing experience required This course will enable delegates to use an editing packages advanced features. This includes titles; exporting movie formats; editing to tape for broadcast; using bars with a waveform and vectorscope; work flow strategies: shortcuts, split audio edits, nesting, offline modes, and compatibility with other software. Moving Image Colour Correction Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Editors / multimedia artists / edit system owners Previous Experience: editing or multimedia experience required An introduction to digitally manipulating colour and contrast with Final Cut Pro, Combustion, Commotion or After Effects. Includes: levels and curves in Photoshop. Using analytical tools such as waveform, vectorscopes and histograms. Colorization and correction techniques & matching of colour space. Digital Video Effects for editors Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Editors / multimedia artists Previous Experience: editing or multimedia experience required An introduction to manipulating video within an editing application. This includes various ways of achieving special effects: compositing (video montage), transfer modes, blue screen and luma key, key frames, filters, rendering sequences, importing and exporting images from Photoshop and deinterlaceing fields. Painting digitally onto moving images Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Editors / multimedia artists Previous Experience: editing or multimedia experience required An introduction to Rotoscoping with the Commotion or After Effects or the Combustion interface. Includes: working in RAM, animation tools, matte painting, alpha channels & output, and tracking. Compositing Moving Images Duration: 3 day workshop Audience: Editors / multimedia artists Previous Experience: comprehensive editing or multimedia experience required An introduction to manipulating video within Commotion or After Effects or the Combustion interface. This includes various ways of achieving special effects: compositing (video montage), transfer modes, pulling and refining mattes (blue screen; colour difference; difference and luma keys), despill, key frames, filters, rendering & nesting sequences, : levels and curves in Photoshop. Using analytical tools such as waveform, vectorscopes and histograms. Colorization and correction techniques & matching of composites, importing and exporting images from Photoshop, fields and deinterlace, alpha channels & output. Streaming video (QuickTime Pro) Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Film makers / editors / multimedia artists / producers Previous Experience: editing or multimedia experience recommended This workshop uses QuickTime Pro with examples from Media Cleaner. Issues covered will include compression, encoding, formats, streaming and putting the work on the web, and the different contexts video can be shown in. Video Production (Introduction) Duration: 4 day workshop Audience: Those with no experience of video production Previous Experience: none required This course is centred on engaging people. Everyone has the opportunity to work in front of and behind the camera, using the simplest possible equipment to encourage the process as opposed to the technical side. The group completes various exercises and produces a short drama going through every stage of production. Video Cinematography (Camera) Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Film-makers / camera owners Previous Experience: none required An introduction into using a video camera. Basic health and safety; how to set up and balance a tripod. Rules of composition; Identifying shot sizes & shot movements. Set up and balance a tripod. Basic Photography (Manual Focus Techniques, focal length. Iris and gain. Setting correct exposure. Increasing and decreasing depth of field). When & how to use filters / colour balance. Colour Temperature effects. Using Waveform & Vector scopes Recording bars or charts. Good Practice when filming Video Cinematography (Lighting) Duration: 1 day workshop Audience: Film-makers / camera owners Previous Experience: none required An introduction into using lights. Basic health and safety. Using sunlight on location, positioning of subject (sunlight, artificial). Night-time effects. Setting up equipment. Identifying lights and equipment. Types of light/shadow (soft/hard; intensity; colour temperature). Style - High Key and Low key; 3 point lighting; Basic electrical theory; Lighting on location.
